The list of best tips for keeping battery of your electric ATV healthy

Motorsports is currently one of the fastest-growing industries, and it has never faced any slowdown since jumping on to the ride of fast-paced growth track. Well, because of so much growth, now there are many options in motorsports, not only for adults but also for kids. And one such motorsports option which has become a new normal for every rider is ATV.

All-Terrain Vehicles, or what is more popularly known as four-wheelers, have slowly become one of the most admired motorsports choices among both kids and adults. Now, people have both options for gas and electric ATVs, and both these options have their own advantages. But if you are planning to buy an electric ATV for yourself or your kids, then you will surely have to take care of its battery if you want to harness the advantages of these new-gen motorsports like no need for fuel, no pollution, less noisy and much more.

But not every electric ATV owner is aware of the tips and tricks they can use in order to maintain the health of their electric ATV's battery. This is why we have come up with some useful tricks and tips that you can use to extend the lifespan of your electric ATV's battery.

Go through the details of your battery

One of the first things that you will need to do is to understand your battery in a detailed manner. This will help you in understanding which type of maintenance the battery requires. This will also affect how and where you charge your battery. There are basically two types of batteries used in electric ATVs; absorbed glass mat (AGM) and a wet cell. The wet cell battery has been used in motorsports for a very long period, but in new-gen electric ATVs, these batteries have been replaced by AGM. If you have a wet cell battery, then you will have to make sure you charge it in a well-ventilated area.

Take the battery out for longer storage

You can't allow your child to ride kids' electric ATV throughout the year as thick layers of snow during the winter season might force you to keep your electric ATV in the garage for a very long period of time. If you are planning to hibernate your kid's electric ATV, then you should never leave it with the battery intact. According to the experts, you should always take out the batteries if you are planning to store your electric ATV for more than 15 days.

Keep the battery clean

Although there are many reasons why your electric ATV's battery might stop working, in most of the cases, it is because the terminals get corroded. If you will not keep your battery clean then soon you will notice gunk building up on terminals of your battery and this can really hamper the performance of your ATV and in some cases, the battery might completely stop working. In addition to this, blocked and corroded terminals can even reduce the life of batteries. To keep your battery clean, you will have to first remove the leads connected to the terminals and use a brush to get rid of gunk and corrosion. You can also apply a good quality battery terminal protective solution.

Know about your battery temperature

This is important only if you are living in a cold area or if you take out your electric ATV during the winter season. But this doesn't mean that extreme heat is not an issue. Most of the batteries are designed to be charged under 120 degrees F. But cold is a much bigger problem when it comes to your battery temperature. A good quality electric ATV battery is designed to be charged at minimum -4 degrees F. If you are riding or charging your ATV in temperature around -4 degree F or lesser than that, then you will have to be extra careful.

Check the voltage level

If your battery is maintenance-free, then you will surely need to check the voltage level. According to the electric ATV expert, you will need to check the voltage level of your battery after every three months. All you will need to check the voltage level of your battery is a voltmeter. But make sure that your battery caps are not loose while checking the voltage level and charge the battery to 100% before using the voltmeter in order to get an accurate reading. This will ensure better performance of your battery, and any issue will be addressed properly.

If you want to make the most of your electric ATV or want your kid to enjoy the ride for a long period of time, then you will need to ensure the health of the battery. Just like engines in traditional motorsports, batteries act as the heart of your electric ATV.
